Steel or Aluminium? What is the difference?
Residential and commercial metal roofing is primarily made of steel or aluminium. All steel roofing has a protective barrier on both sides of the sheet, underneath and separate from any paint which discloses colour to the product. This is called metallic coating which protects against rusting. There are two types of coatings used: galvanised which uses 100% Zinc in various thicknesses and Galvalume, a mix of aluminium and zinc. Steel roofing is made in different gauges, the higher the gauge, the thinner the steel.
Aluminium metal roofing is designated by decimal thickness. Aluminium is extremely resistant to corrosion caused by seawater, making it an ideal choice for Sydney suburbs located closer to the ocean. On the other hand, aluminium is lighter in weight than steel. It’s lightness and thinness also mean less insulation against heat and cold. However, Aluminium is more malleable than steel, allowing it to be used in more complex profiles. Steel is more fire resistant without underlayment, while Aluminium does require proper underlayment.
Steel has more strength than aluminium and is usually less expensive. Steel is available in flat or corrugated, depending on the look you want to achieve. The advantage of corrugated roofing is that the corrugation guides water off the roof efficiently without causing pooled water after heavy rain falls.
